Helpful Tips if Your Lawn is Always Dry

Have you noticed that your lawn always appears dry? If so, you may be tempted to fix this issue with water – and then more water. Unfortunately, this may only make the situation worse. While your grass needs water to grow, overwatering is extremely bad for your lawn. If you want to ensure your lawn remains lush and green, without overwatering, use the tips here.

Let Nature Take the Lead

In most cases, water from the rain is enough to maintain a healthy and beautiful lawn. You only have to water if the weather is extremely dry and no rainfall has occurred. You may also notice that the grass has begun to look dull and that it has lost its springiness (this is obvious if you can see footprints). At this point, it may be time to pull out the sprinklers.

Use a Rain Gauge

A rain gauge can help you figure out how much water your grass is getting from rain, along with your sprinkler system. If necessary, you can make adjustments if the weather is more wet than usual.

Avoid Watering Too Often

A deep, thorough watering a few times a week is much better for your grass than a light watering each day. If you water lightly day after day, then your grass is going to have shallow roots. This won’t create the healthy, lush lawn you want.

It may be smart to talk to the lawn irrigation professionals about installing a drip irrigation system. You can set it to come on certain times of the day/week to make sure your grass gets the right amount of water. Ideally, it needs approximately a quarter of an inch, two times a week.

Water at the Right Time of Day

The best time for you to water your lawn is in the early morning or the early evening. This will give your grass the chance to get dry while the air is still somewhat cool.

Try not to water your lawn during the mid-part of the day, when the sun is the hottest. This can cause burns to the grass. If you plan to water in the evening, don’t leave the sprinkler on all night. As mentioned before, too much water isn’t good for your lawn. A great way to ensure your lawn gets the right amount of water is by using an irrigation system featuring a timer setting.

Call the Professionals for More Help

The fact is, there isn’t a secret formula that will ensure healthy, green, great looking grass for every yard. In many cases, it is a process of trial and error to see what works.
