Kansas City Irrigation Systems Spring 2015

Kansas City Irrigation Systems Spring 2015

In Kansas City, it’s the time of year when new buds emerge on the trees, flowers begin to emerge, the grass starts to grow, and everything comes to life. Sure, maintaining a beautiful lawn can be a lot of work considering the mowing, weed eating, fertilizing, poisoning weeds, etc. – but isn’t it worth it? At IDL Company, we can help you make at least one aspect of lawn maintenance easier, and that’s watering. Our automated sprinkler systems help keep your landscape looking vibrant and beautiful, with little or no work necessary on your part!

Now that we’re talking about sprinkler systems, if you already have one you want to be sure it’s functioning properly. There are a few steps that should be taken during spring to ensure your automated sprinkler system is working properly. If any repairs or alterations are needed, it’s important you have a qualified irrigation technician perform the work.

Now, for a few maintenance tips Kansas City homeowners will find useful:

Before the temperatures get hot, you should plug in the control panel and make any adjustments. Slowly turn the water on and run each zone on a short cycle, so that you can visually inspect your sprinkler system. Once spring has sprung (and it has), grass may prevent the sprinkler heads from opening if it has grown over them, so you need to check each one.

By visually inspecting your sprinkler system, you can detect any sprinkler heads that may be clogged, misaligned, or broken. During this inspection, also look for insufficient water pressure, broken pipes, or other problems. Depending on the difficulty of the issue, you may be able to solve the problem yourself, however if the issue is beyond your capabilities, you may need to call in your service technician.

Upon inspecting your sprinkler system, do the following:

  • Clean out any sprinkler heads that are clogged
  • Reposition any misaligned heads using an adjustment tool to ensure the spray is covering the proper area
  • Replace or repair any sprinkler heads or pipes that are broken
  • Any issues with water pressure should be taken care of by an irrigation contractor with the necessary tools/parts to make adjustments and/or repairs.

Once you’re confident your automatic sprinkler system is functioning properly, you don’t want to forget about it for the rest of the summer. Once each month, perform a visual inspection on your system. When temperatures heat up, it may be necessary to make adjustments to the various zones in your landscape to ensure each zone is getting the proper amount of water.

Keep in mind that most lawns, flower beds, plants, and trees don’t require as much watering in spring months as they do in summer months. Frequency and duration needs change, and should be programmed into the controller so that your landscape receives just the right amount of water.
